Also since every camera manufacturer makes their own RAW format (Nikon. The problem with the RAW files that your camera produces is that they are proprietary. So here it is – Why DNG?: What is DNG?ĭNG stands for Digital Negative format. I realized that while I’ve talked about converting RAW files into DNG format for years at seminars, training classes and on my videos, I’ve never really done a blog post on it. I normally wait for PSE to be sold off cheaply although this time I'm not sure that even PSE18 supports the G9.A few days ago one of my readers left a comment on one of my posts and he was basically asking why I convert my camera’s RAW files into DNG (Digital Negative) format? He asked if I had a post that I could refer him to about my reasons. I've gone down the DNG route everytime I've upgraded my camera and it's not too much hassle. Might even be worth doing it now, rather than pfaffing around with the DNG converter at all? PS It's a process that quickly gets very tiresome (and makes for a really anticlimactic end to any holiday!), so I imagine you'll soon be wanting some newer software. Quite a busy bunch of programmers, aren't they!

Probably worth getting the newest, although Windows versions of all those can be had from. with these the DNG converter releases since the final PSE15-compatible ACR - in reverse order, and USA date format!. These are the "earliest" ACR / DNG converter versions for Lumixes too new for PSE15:ġ0.3. There's an overlap with Elements 2018 (autumn 2017), packaged with 9.6.

I'd appreciate any input to help me through this obstacleĮlements 15 (launched 2016, with ACR 9.6 ) seems to support versions up to 9.10 (April 2017).

Just to make matters more confusing Adobe seem to be hiding DNG convertor downloads or batching them in with the latest ACR but reading between the lines I think that is only for the full PS.

I have considered seeing if I can download a newer version of DNG convertor even though I don't think I need it. I don't understand why, surely an RW2 is an RW2. When I try to open a folder containg RW2 files from my G9, I get "no items match your search".

When I try to open a folder containg RW2 files from my G80 they all show and can be converted to DNG. I have an old version of Adobe DNG convertor. PSE15 tells me no available updates so I assume that 9.10 is as far it will go. I assume that this not a recent enough version of ACR to deal with RW2 files from the G9. I have PS Elements 15 which has Adobe Camera Raw 9.10. The string "Panasonic Lumix DC-G9" could be replaced by "Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7" but the two strings are different in length by 1 character, and so you will have to experiment by deleting the previous character or the next character to keep either the end point of the string or the start point of the string in the same location. Likely there are offsets that indicate where different sections of the RAW file start. You do have to be careful not to change the length of the text string, as you will get into trouble if you change the length of the file. I lso observe that changing the ACII text that indicates the camera model to an older camera model is often successful. I observe that Capture One Pro, for example, will refuse to open an RW2 file from a camera it hasn't been updated for - similar to your expereince. With most Hexeditor's you can actually search for the string.

When you open an RW2 file with a Hex editor, you will find two places where the camera model is identified as ASCII text.
